Young parents tackle long odds to better themselves
Joyce M. Miles
Sunday, May 08, 2005

The morning routine goes something like this:

Wake, feed and dress baby. Shower, dress and maybe feed yourself. Get the diaper bag together — bottles, toys, diapers, wipes, whatever — and get the carseat or carrier ready.

Don’t forget your book bag. Is your homework done?

Now hurry, because class is starting soon and baby being up all night isn’t an excuse for being late.

Welcome to mom’s world when she’s a student in Orleans-Niagara BOCES Alternative Parenting Program.

Call it high school plus, where girls who are pregnant or have given birth are learning what they need to know to pass their Regents exams — and beat the odds.

Playing the hand they’re dealt

In the AP homeroom at Niagara Career & Technical Education Center, the sign running the length of one wall speaks directly to girls who have grown up too quickly: “What happens tomorrow depends on today.”

The 16 young women enrolled in Alternative Parenting have made a series of conscious choices that, statistically, put them at high risk for being ensnared in poverty. They’re babies who had babies and chose to be full-time mothers when other girls their age are going out for varsity sports, spending their part-time wages on fun stuff and getting ready for the spring dance.

History is not in these moms’ favor. Statistically, teen mothers are shown to earn far less in their childbearing years than other women; frequently they end up relying on public assistance. Only one-third of teen moms in the United States obtain a high school diploma, Save The Children reports.

Children of teen mothers have a tougher time, too. Their moms are less likely to receive adequate prenatal care, putting them at higher risk for low birth weight and health problems. As they grow, they’re more liable to suffer from abuse and neglect, more likely to perform poorly in school and are on track to keep the cycle of poverty going.

One study of teen moms in later life shows about 25 percent of their daughters wound up being teen moms too; another shows sons are at higher-than-normal risk of ending up incarcerated.

Alternative Parenting’s mission is to get girls and their babies on a saner track, according to primary instructor Peg Behnke.

“These are at-risk kids,” she said. “Some of them were headed for a brick wall going real fast.”

Students themselves will admit it’s true — that before motherhood visited them, they were, simply put, bad girls: Drinking, doing drugs, skipping school, roaming wild and bound to fail life’s basic tests.

But then the pink line surfaces on the drug-store test, and things change.

“When you’re dealt a hand, you have to play with it,” Josephine Brevetti of Niagara Falls said. “You grow up quick.”

Brevetti, 31, spent her senior year of high school in AP, the way paved and tuition paid by her home school, Niagara-Wheatfield High School, after she disclosed her pregnancy.

Luckily for Brevetti, her circumstances were somewhat different from the norm. She wasn’t on the “bad” track when she got pregnant, and her son’s father didn’t desert her like so many other girls’ partners do. Nonetheless, at 18, she feared motherhood meant the end of her dreams.

AP showed her she was wrong.

“It showed me you can do it. It’s a handicap, and you have to work a little harder, but you can do it,” she said. “You just have to keep trudging on.”

With encouragement from AP and help from her family, Brevetti beat the odds facing teen moms. After graduating high school in 1992, she put herself through Niagara University, landed a good job at Verizon Communication and is substitute teaching in high schools around the area. She hopes to land a full-time teaching post soon.

To this day, she carries a special reminder from her AP days — a copy of the book “Oh, The Places You Can Go,” by Dr. Seuss.

“It shows you, you can go anywhere you want,” Brevetti said.

BY JOHN CHAPPELL: Staff Writer

Newsman Jack Perkins says not to watch or listen to the news, at least not much.

Perkins is known as a television journalist, work he has done for 40 years — first for NBC News and more recently as a host of the “Biography” series on the Arts and Entertainment Network (A and E).

Emmy-nominated Perkins was seen on “NBC Nightly News,” “The Huntley-Brinkley Report,” and “The Today Show,” where he appeared occasionally as host. His essays were heard regularly on NBC radio.

He spoke recently to members of the English-Speaking Union in a crowded ballroom at C.C.N.C. and warned these lovers of language against the bullying pulpit of the press, at least the broadcast press.

Perkins was a year late, having been forced to cancel last year’s appearance. He told them he would make up for that.

“Since I missed last year, what I really ought to do is give you two speeches,” Perkins said. “This is, in its entirety, a commencement speech given at Lake Forest University by Theodor Geisel — Dr. Seuss. The title is, ‘My Uncle Terwilliger on the Art of Eating Popovers.’

My uncle ordered popovers

from the restaurant’s bill of fare.

And, when they were served,

he regarded them

with a penetrating stare…

Then he spoke great Words of Wisdom

as he sat there on that chair:

“To eat these things,”

said my uncle,

“you must exercise great care.

You may swallow down what’s solid…

BUT…

you must spit out the air!”

And…

as you partake of the world’s bill of fare,

that’s darned good advice to follow.

Do a lot of spitting out the hot air.

And be careful what you swallow.”

He proceeded to give examples in what he termed his second speech. Perkins had been brought into broadcasting by David Brinkley, whose own first reporting job in Wilmington came from the late Sam Ragan, former editor and publisher of The Pilot.

“They called me David Brinkley’s writer,” he said. “But nobody could write like Brinkley. News departments, in those days, were run by news people.

Wow. What a concept. Broadcast organizations were run by broadcasters. They didn’t expect news departments to make money. They certainly didn’t require them to make money.”

That was how it was, and networks not only accepted it, they were proud of it.

“News was not a commodity to be sold,” he said. “It was a service to be given. What happened?”

Things changed with one single program.

“Don Hewitt happened,” he said. “Mike Wallace happened. Harry Reasoner happened. Among the three of them, they put together a program, ‘60 Minutes,’ that ran on Sunday afternoon at a strange time. It didn’t get much audience. It was a news ‘magazine.’ Eventually, they set it over to 7 o’clock Sunday night.

“We were not allowed to have adult programming at that time, so they said, ‘We’ll stick this program in there to fill that slot.’ Then they started to get audience. And the audience built. Because the audience built, they could charge more for commercials. Suddenly they were making money, they weren’t losing. They were making money on that program. Well, that did it. If they could make money with a news program, then every news program ought to have to make money.”

News turned into entertainment. New owners took over broadcast networks.

“Something fundamentally changed, instead of broadcasters owning them,” he said. “In 1986 GE took over NBC. Larry Tisch and his brother became controlling stockholders of CBS. The Disney Corporation bought ABC.”

Perkins didn’t like what he saw.

“I remember talking to David Brinkley and complaining,” he said. “He said, ‘Jack, what do you expect? It’s not the way it was when we were there. Today the networks are owned by a light-bulb maker, a real estate man, and Mickey Mouse.’”

When Perkins started in the journalism business, even the language was different.

“We used to use verbs when we did the news,” he said. “Nowadays, do you notice how many sentences are elliptical sentences like, ‘Bush today, calling Democrats wishy-washy.’ Where’s the verb? Do you save that much time?”

He had spent the afternoon in Southern Pines, visiting an old friend, retired ABC newsman Bill Beutel.

“It was wonderful to reminisce about, well, what you and I all do,” he said. “Thinking about what television used to be like, and what it is now. About what radio used to be like, and what it is now. And regretting the changes.”

“I live in Sarasota, Fla.,” Perkins said. “NPR does, in our market, four hours of news in the morning. Who the hell wants that? And on local newscasts you get something about the movie that’s going to be on that night, and some specious tie-in.”

Television labels everything, he said. You cannot see so much as a single shot of a person without the medium placing a label on it: disgruntled fireman.

“How would you like to be identified with just that label?” Perkins asked. “It’s the Chiron problem; Chiron is the device that puts letters on the screen. Problem is, there are only 28 characters. Second problem is, they get to choose the characters. They can say anything they want to.

“What good does the labeling do? It is the kind of labeling you get when you talk about ‘soccer moms.’ How demeaning. Hippies and yuppies and boomers and busters, and does anybody care what those are? We get labeled, because that makes it easier for ‘the media’ to pigeonhole us. And that makes it easier to generalize. That is what news is, is generalization.

“Television is there to make money, so news is there to make money; so it has to be entertainment. I think it is a matter of limiting, so that it does not absorb every pore of your brain. Otherwise, you get too much speculation, and too much innuendo.”

Broadcast news pushes and shoves its audience, according to Perkins.

“They manipulate you,” he said. “They find someone who will cry. They get them to cry. They put it on the air. That’s dramatic. That’s horrible.”

Language itself is dumbed down, its richness diluted by the eternal, unending news.

“They are cliché ridden,” he said. “(Announcer voice:) ‘The death toll is expected to rise …’ Yeah. Unless some dead people start coming back to life. Clichés, Clichés. (Announcer again:) ‘Another night of bone-chilling cold …’ What do storms do to their winds? They ‘pack’ them:

‘Storms packing winds of 35 miles an hour … ’ Or the weather forecaster who says, ‘We are expecting six more inches of snow tomorrow, and then even more of the white stuff the next day.’ They think you can’t use the same word twice, so more of ‘the white stuff’ tomorrow. The white stuff. What if it is rain? Do we expect more of the wet stuff? Or a hurricane: more of ‘the blowy stuff’ — do they not know? Do they not care? Do they not think we know? Do they not care if we know?”

Such carelessness comes at great cultural cost, in Perkins’ view.

“Isn’t our language our most precious possession?” he asked. “Shouldn’t we protect it?”

Another reason not to watch the news, or at least, not watch it very much, please, he said, is that it is so speculative, and tries to make everything a controversy.

“No matter what position is taken by the most prominent leaders, they try to get someone who will take the polar opposite,” he said. “They create controversy where really there need be no controversy. Can you think of anything that might happen that they could not present as a controversy?

“That they would not find an opposing view? The Second Coming? Don’t even think about what that would mean.”

It is its cumulative internal effect that ultimately leaves the deepest wounds on the public.

“Finally, I suggest not watching so much television and listening to so much radio; because it ultimately poisons you and corrodes your psyche and maybe your soul,” he said. “9/11 happened, and we were glued. It was everywhere, and there was nothing we could do.”

Interminable coverage began and lasted for days, weeks, in some sense ever since.

“Believe me, I have been involved in this round-the-clock coverage of things from the assassinations on,” he said. “After a point, there is nothing more to be said. You sit there and you listen to it, and you get too much misinformation and too much meaningless conjecture.”

It sinks in. And it stays.

“You get too much in you; it does not help you,” he said. “The answer and the consolation ultimately will not be found in your television set when things like that happen. Have a strong supportive family, friends. Be with them. Comfort each other. If you are lucky, you will realize that you have a God who can offer you that same comfort, and support.

“Next time, my suggestion is, don’t go to the TV,” Perkins said. “Go to your knees. Go on spitting out hot air; and be careful what you swallow.”

David Nostradamus: Marlins President David Samson came out of his one year of retirement as team prophet and made another prediction.

The Marlins, according to Samson, will win 93 games.

"We did a statistical analysis based on the new breed of analytic, statistical general managers,'' Samson said. "We put all through the Dr. Seuss-like belly-off machine from The Sneetches, and out came 93.''

Most took Samson as seriously as Dr. Seuss two years ago when he forecast 91 wins. By the season's end, he was the Big Cat In the Hat when the Marlins not only won 91, but then the World Series.

Owner David Loria, though, isn't so sure about the lofty expectations.

"I just got to tell David he's got to stop smoking,'' Loria said.

Mike Lowell isn't paying attention to predictions, although he's aware of Samson's past.

"His track record is pretty good,'' Lowell said. "If 93 wins get you in the playoffs, then I accept the challenge. If we win 86 games and get to the playoffs, then 86.''

Other predictions:

• On today's attendance, Samson predicted more than last season's 55,315.

• On the season attendance, Samson predicted between 2 million and 2.1 million.

"Short of (hurricanes like) Charley, Frances, Jeanne and Ivan, we firmly believe we will hit 2 million,'' Sampson said.

Samson said season tickets are slightly down from a year ago but season-ticket revenue and single-game tickets are up.

Take a seat: The Marlins added one row of premium, cushioned seats (121 total) behind the plate and along the lines behind first and third base, in the process, cutting down foul territory.

The seats were sold as part of season-ticket packages and cost $125 to renew and $135 for new customers behind home plate, and $41 to renew and $51 for new customers along the lines.

"They're nice seats, it's huge for the fans and it will help the hitters,'' catcher Paul Lo Duca said. "I don't need to block balls now.''

Beloved Dr. Seuss characters come alive in musical

The Herald-Dispatch
Matt Hempel/The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON -- Dr. Seuss’ arsenal of beloved characters hit the Tri-State in a big way Friday, when First Stage Theater Co. breathed life into such favorites as The Cat in the Hat and Yertle the Turtle.

The group’s ambitious, all-youth performance of "Seussical the Musical" was intended not only to delight audiences, but also to share with them the joys of reading.

The production by 75 cast members and a live orchestra has close to 30 musical numbers, including Motown and Latin dancing, and the story includes war, romance, comedy and sweet moments.

"The messages are so important in this show," said director Clint McElroy. "It’s all about encouraging kids to use their imagination. It’s all about cooperation and family and working together."

A hilarious rendition of the First Book of Nephi in "Green Eggs and Ham" format.

"What if the Book of Mormon had been written by Dr. Seuss?"
Author: Unknown

Nephi: Of goodly parents I was born
I've never drunk, I've never sworn
This is Lehi, he's my dad
Laman, Lemuel, they are bad
And who is this? Why this is Sam
Yes, this is Sam;

Sam: Sam I am

Laman: That Sam I am, that Sam I am
I do not like that Sam I am

Sam: In a tent, my father dwelt

Laman: And it's so hot, I think I'll melt

Lemuel: Our father's brain is out of whack

Laman: Yeah, it's too hot, I'm going back

Lehi: Then go and get the plates my dear

Laman: On second thought, I'm staying here

Nephi: You said you'd leave and go away
Now all you want to do is stay?

Lemuel: That Nephi always gets his way

Laman: Here we are in this damp cave

Sam: We would not be here if you'd behave

Nephi: I will go and I will do
There's the angel, that's my cue
Laban's had too much to drink
Now he'll lose his head, I think

Nephi: Look what I found, a brother from the quorum

Sam: We will take him home, we will call him Zoram

Lemuel: Oh great, another pathetic life form

Laman: Our gold and silver we have spent
I do not like it in this tent

Lemuel: I cannot read the Liahona
I must have drunk too much Corona

Laman: We hate it here, we have no lives

Lehi: Then go back to the city and get some wives

Lehi: A tree, a tree, I see a tree
The fruit is white, the fruit is free
A floating building, could it be?
Why do they laugh and stare at me?

Laman, Lemuel, come and see

Laman: We will not eat your precious fruit

Lemuel: We will not wear a tie and suit

Laman: We will not help you build your boat

Lemuel: We do not think that it will float

Laman: No not this boat, it will not float
Not even in a shallow moat
I do not care what Nephi wrote

Lemuel: We will not eat your fruit I say

Laman: We will not eat it on a tray

Lemuel: And we won't eat it in a tent
Not even if your clothes you rent

Laman: We'd rather have a can of spam
L & L: We will not eat it, Sam I am

Sam: You do not like it, so you say
Try it, try it, and you may
Try it and you may I say

Laman: Sam, if you will let us be,
We will try it, you will see

L&L: Say, we like this fruit of life
Sorry that we caused such strife
You've saved us from an awful jam
Thank you, thank you, Sam I am

Twentieth Century Fox Animation Acquires Rights to Dr. Seuss Classic, HORTON HEARS A WHO

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 2005--Following almost two years of negotiations, Twentieth Century Fox Animation has acquired rights to turn the Dr. Seuss classic, HORTON HEARS A WHO, into a computer generated animated feature film, it was announced today by Chris Meledandri, president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation.

Blue Sky Studios, the New York-based unit of Twentieth Century Fox Animation, will produce HORTON HEARS A WHO. Previously, Blue Sky produced the blockbuster animated feature "Ice Age."

Fox made the deal for HORTON HEARS A WHO with Audrey Geisel, widow of Theodor Geisel, who penned his beloved novels under the name "Dr. Seuss." Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio are currently writing the screenplay.

Commented Chris Meledandri: "I have always wanted to do a digitally animated Dr. Seuss movie, and HORTON HEARS A WHO has the right narrative structure to make a wonderful film."

Fox has also acquired the rights to the second book in the "Horton" series, "Horton Hatches the Egg."

Dr. Seuss Had It Right

There’s a Dr. Seuss book we used to read to our boys years ago. A couple lines from the book have been stuck in my head the past week or so.

Don’t remember the title of this particular book. We have a dozen or so of his books yet; kept them handy to read to our grandkids. Unfortunately, the one book I’d like to find is not among them.

In typical Seuss fashion, it was about the wonders that a child will see in their lifetime. The one line that’s been haunting me goes something like “Oh, the places you’ll go and the people you’ll see...” Can’t remember much more than that, although it has occurred to me that that may indeed be the title.

At any rate, the reason this particular verse has new significance is that it seems so apropos to the almost child-like wonder the wife and I experienced in our recent sojourn to South Africa to attend our former exchange student’s wedding. Certainly the places we went and the things we saw were amazing, but not nearly so much as the people we met.

We couldn’t help but feel an immediate bond with Robert’s parents, since we were his surrogate parents for several months. “Delightful people” doesn’t begin to do them justice; it seemed like we’d been old friends for years.

Robert’s older sister is an accomplished marathon runner, and her son is a 13-year-old aspiring to be a golf professional. He already carries a handicap of five and dreams of playing on the American PGA Tour. Besides that, he is polite to a fault and dances a mean disco.

There was Holga, a South African native now living in London. Although he feels our President Bush “shouldn’t be so stubborn about some things,” he feels the American people did the right thing in re-electing him and would love to someday move to America. “That’s where the best opportunities are,” he says without a hint of doubt.

He brought along a friend of his, Stuart, a native Brit who makes documentary films. Among his other projects is a swim suit calendar that, according to Robert’s German friends, is quite a hot item in Europe; hard to find, almost a cult icon for the young “hip” Europeans. Stuart is one of those people who have a vault full of stories and has a way of telling them that you could listen to for week or three. He couldn’t stay for the wedding however, as one of his clients was “being unreasonable” in not rescheduling an appointment.

“Not much I can do,” Stuart lamented. “He’s a pretty big Italian guy, has a ton of money and I think he’s Mafia.”

Probably a good appointment to keep.

Speaking of the Germans, two of Robert’s friends, Heinrich and Roland, had those classic, striking Aryan features: blonde hair, square jaw, blue eyes, light complexion. You could easily visualize them in a Nazi uniform in an old World War II flick. But they, too, were very polite and gracious. Both, in fact, had been exchange students in The States, had fond memories of America and were eager to talk about it with us.

There was the American GI we ran into between connecting planes in Amsterdam.

“Where you headed, soldier?” I asked him.

“Iraq, sir.” You’d think he was addressing his drill sergeant.

“Good luck, son,” I told him as we shook hands.

“Thank you, sir. I appreciate that.”

A brief encounter that kept things in perspective.

And then there was a fellow whose name I didn’t get, but provided a good laugh and perhaps an insight into how Americans are perceived.

Since Robert came to us through a Rotary Student Exchange program, it seemed appropriate that I attend a Rotary meeting in Cape Town. Turns out I wasn’t the only American there. (And I thought I’d be quite the unusual visitor!)

They wanted a picture afterward of the three of us foreigners with the club president, after which one of the members tapped me on the arm and remarked,

“I say, young man,” (I always like to be called that any more.) “I’ve not seen this many Americans in one place that I can recall,” he said. “I just wonder if there’s anyone left in Baghdad.”

He had a broad smile on his face and we shared a hearty laugh. As I related that little story with Robert and others, I’ve gotten mixed reactions: from a straightforward chuckle to a look of surprise and an assumption that it was a mean-spirited remark.

In retrospect , I suppose he could have been making a jab at Americans, but I didn’t take it that way. Struck me as a lighthearted remark, nothing more. We parted with a light clap on the shoulder and a firm handshake. I saw nothing but friendliness in his eyes.

After all, he left me with a good story to tell.

Would sure like to find that Dr. Seuss book and see what else might be in store for us ... oh, the places we’ll go and the people we’ll see...

Years before Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991) gained worldwide acclaim for his children's books, he honed his craft making cartoons for other young minds: American soldiers.

Racy and suggestive, the animated films are enough to shatter one's innocent appraisal of such Seuss titles as "The Seven Lady Godivas," "Hop on Pop" and -- say it isn't so -- "There's a Wocket in My Pocket!"

The short military-training cartoons, along with disturbing propaganda films that Seuss also worked on, were shown to troops during and shortly after World War II. Although most copies of the movies were destroyed, a few dozen people in San Francisco were lucky enough to see several of them over the weekend when Dennis Nyback, a New York film curator, was in town to screen them in a touring program he calls "The Dark Side of Dr. Seuss."

"You know, most people are complicated," Nyback says. "There's this view of Dr. Seuss that's pretty much two-dimensional."

Fittingly enough, Seuss' little-known films were shown at Oddball Film+Video, an archival space in the Mission District that is itself little known. (Its Web site is www.oddballfilm.com.) Also the home of the nonprofit San Francisco Media Archive, it's a hidden-away and homey outfit that houses roughly 50,000 films -- everything from "Alcohol -- How Much Is Too Much?" to "Seed Dispersal" -- on shelves that nearly touch 13-foot ceilings.

"I have somewhat of an obsessive nature," explains Stephen Parr, the archive's director.

At Oddball, any dreamy childhood vision of a wholesome, grandfatherly Dr. Seuss quickly disappeared when Parr got the projector rolling at the event, lit only by candles. The screen brightened and was soon filled with the cartoon image of a jolly, jug-eared dunce. His name: Private Snafu. As the film's narrator coyly announces, that stands for "situation normal, all fffouled up."

Private Snafu was the rather crafty creation of Col. Frank Capra, who during World War II ran the Armed Forces Motion Picture Unit. (He also made something of a name for himself by directing such movies as "It's a Wonderful Life.") Seuss (then known as Lt. Col. Geisel) headed the animation unit and wrote the Snafu scripts.

In enlisting Seuss' services, the Army was able to stop making deadly dull training films and instead put useful information across while making the young troops bust their guts laughing. Or so one imagines: It must have been pretty uproarious in the 1940s for young men in their late teens to see Snafu (voiced by the inimitable Mel Blanc) flirting with a big-eyed doll whose breasts and butt conceal bombs. (Lesson: "If you are a boob, you will be trapped.")

In another short, "Target Snafu," an army of mosquitoes carrying malaria descends on our dumb hero's bare bum. And in "Rumors," Snafu misinterprets a joke he hears in the latrine; he thinks his base is under attack. The rumor spreads -- in the form of very Seussian flying baloney sausages.

Although Seuss opposed what he called the "dissemination of stupidity" --

in his lifetime he championed progressive causes, condemning, for one, anti- Semitism -- some of his most unsettling cartoons include stereotypical and racist depictions of slanted-eyed, bucktoothed Japanese soldiers.

Nyback has an explanation for why more people aren't familiar with Seuss' wartime work: "I don't think his estate particularly wants to promote it," he deadpans.

The more serious stuff that Seuss put out -- the movies that seemingly have little to do with the former editorial cartoonist for PM, a left-wing New York newspaper -- are propaganda films Seuss also wrote for the U.S. Armed Forces. Two screened at Oddball Film+Video are the scathing and fear-mongering "Your Job in Germany" and "Our Job in Japan."

Both films show gruesome images of war victims and suggest that those countries are made up of naturally bellicose people who must be tamed. For the film on Germany, Seuss wrote these words: "The German people are not our friends. ... Trust none of them." Interestingly, Seuss was a German American; as a child, his nickname was "the Kaiser."

In the film on Japan, the narrator implies that "the Japanese brain" is to blame for their wars. The Americans, the narrator proudly proclaims, have the answer: "We can prove that most Americans don't believe in pushing people around -- even when we're on top."

That line, more than anything said by a goofy cartoon character, drew one of the biggest laughs of the night from the audience.

Hear that, Horton?
